Assumption of rights
I encountered the following post on Lifehacker and it was one of those “how to do it” posts I find to be unethical. The content of the post explained how to take advantage of multiple hacks that allowed someone to avoid a paywall and access content that normally would require a subscription. I consider myself a liberal sensitive to the needs of many, but suggesting that among such needs is the access to content it took someone else time and talent to produce and a service that had to invest in resources to provide. I have a very similar reaction to those who use and promote ad blockers on open web sites. The argument is the same - someone made an effort to offer content or provide a service under the condition that you will see an add. The ad blocker overrides the assumption the creator is making.
Some don’t like paywalls. Some don’t like ads. Perfectly appropriate. However, no one must access the content or services that use these devices. If you are doing so, you are acting in an unethical manner. Libraries provide content at no cost. Wikipedia provides content at no cost to users. Ethical sites also do not promote unethical tactics as if the application of such tactics can be justified.
